A few things to consider:
- Private drum lessons cost
- Drum lesson location
- Drum teachers style
Drum Lesson Cost?
Regarding the private drum lessons cost, most teachers broadly follow the Musician’s union pricing guide as a base. From there the cost might be slightly higher or lower to reflect certain things such as:
- Teaching experience
- Facilities offered
- Teacher travel time/cost
As with many things you get what you pay for. Having said that a young, inexperienced teacher might be a good option if you have a young child who wants beginner drum lessons. In that case, it might make sense to pay a cheaper rate for a new teacher fresh from college.
But for another student, they might need the experience of a teacher who has taught hundreds of students and knows the methods to get the best out of each individual.
The best thing is to ask the teacher for their private drum lesson cost and see if it works for you.
Drum Lesson Locations
As far as the drum lesson location goes, that really is personal to you. If you need lessons at your house then you need to find a teacher that offers that. And here you have to weigh up convenience with service. For example, I don’t go to people’s houses because I have a high-spec drum recording studio from which I record drum tracks for artists all around the world. And those same facilities are available to my students.
So I wouldn’t want to arrive at a young student’s house with a badly tuned, lower-range drum kit when I have access to a top-of-the-range studio, recording facilities, hundreds of backing tracks, keyboards and teaching materials to draw from.
You can see the studio in action at my online teaching website DrummerGallop.com. If you want 1-2-1 drum lessons then you can come to the same studio and make use of these facilities and my wealth of drum teaching and performing experience.
Drum Lesson Teaching Style
Lastly, when considering the drum teacher’s style, that is the most unique aspect. Whether you or your child, resonates with a drum teacher or not will have a big impact on their rate of progress and enjoyment. My approach is to have fun and build rapport with a student because music should be fun. But not all personalities resonate so it’s important to find a good match.
The best thing you can do is book an initial lesson and just see if it works for you. Most teachers don’t force any long-term commitment so you can book one lesson and have fun for half an hour, or an hour, and then decide if you want another lesson afterwards.
To help you make that decision many teachers have online teaching content so you can get a feel for how they work before you contact them. Below you will find a video of me teaching a beginner drum beat.
