Harpo Smith

HARPO SMITH’S BIO

Was it the course of shock therapy? Was it the solar flares? Was it the unrelenting diet of sugar and Spam? Who knows, but from the ashes of Orlando Seale and The Swell, HARPO SMITH was born, a jubilant tranche of home-grown bouffon Art-Rock.

Harpo Smith’s debut Superyacht EP is a taster of the upcoming album, ‘How To Spend It’. The title track is delivered in the voice of a swaggering, love-sick, possibly murderous oligarch. The EP also features Timeshare and Terrible Girl, both inspired by advertising and spam email.

HARPO SMITH has gotten off to an auspicious start with gigs supporting Nadine Shah at Omeara and Lux Lisbon at Scala. The band were also invited to play at Abbey Road Studios as part of a celebration of Lennon and McCartney’s songwriting hosted by Lauren Laverne alongside speakers Howard Goodall and Pete Waterman.

They are currently preparing to record their debut album ‘How To Spend It’. The EP is available from iTunes and all the usual streaming services.

WHAT DID I DO WITH HARPO SMITH?

I’ve played with the band from its inception in late 2015. Like it says above we’ve played supporting gigs for the phenomenal Nadine Shah at Omeara and Lux Lisbon at a sold-out Scala, London.

We recorded our debut EP at AIR Studios in early December 2016 which we then released at the Scala gig with Lux Lisbon in April 2017. The EP has three tracks Terrible GirlSuperyacht and Timeshare.

Please welcome HARPO SMITH. SUPERYACHT EP

The title track, Superyacht, is delivered in the voice of a swaggering, love-sick, possibly murderous oligarch. The EP also features Timeshare and Terrible Girl, both inspired by advertising and spam email.

On May 10th 2017 we were invited to play a special celebration of the songwriting of Paul McCartney and John Lennon.

On stage at Abbey RoadWe played two songs from each writer to show the differences in their writing styles. The songs were used as examples for Howard Goodall and Pete Waterman to debate the differences in style.

The event was hosted by Intelligence Squared.

On September 22nd 2018 Harpo Smith was invited to play the debut of HowTheLightGetsIn festival in London. It was hosted at the stunning Kenwood House at the top of Hampstead Heath and took place over the weekend.

And we have since become festival regulars playing a number of How The Light Gets In. which are held in its original location of Hay-on-Wye, Wales.
