About – The Black Square
The Black Square is a bold and urgent new multimedia performance by actor/musician Richard Strange and artist/musician Antonio Olaio. Blending text, film, song, live art, and performance, the work confronts one of the most vital questions of the 21st century:
Who owns our memories?
This visceral, genre-defying experience draws on a dazzling range of cultural touchstones—cave paintings, Jean-Luc Godard, art-school rock, Walter Benjamin, Orwell’s 1984, Kazimir Malevich, Salvador Dalí, and Albert Einstein—to deliver a mind-bending, senses-shattering exploration of art, identity, and control.
“For a night of beautiful strangeness, I recommend making the effort to see this. It’s wonderful.”
— Robert Elms, BBC Radio London“I promise you won’t see a better piece of multimedia performance/art theatre this year.”
WHAT DID I DO THE BLACK SQUARE?
I worked as Stage Manager, overseeing both sound and lighting design, for the multimedia performance The Black Square by Richard Strange and Antonio Olaio during its two-week run at The Courtyard Theatre in January–February 2025. In addition to technical and production management, I also assisted in filming selected performances for documentation and promotional use.
